The RLS Family

🌹 Welcome to Rose Lane Stables!

🐴 Our Story

🌾 Our Roots Run Deep

Our family's legacy in agriculture, education, and youth programs dates back to the 1920s, when Eugene Coutolenc purchased the ranch. Dan Coutolenc, Eugene’s son and the patriarch of our family, grew up deeply involved in agriculture—active in 4-H for many years and serving as Chico High FFA President from 1953 to 1955.

Today, Dan’s sons and grandchildren proudly carry on that tradition through active participation in Butte County 4-H and local FFA chapters. We believe every child should have the opportunity to raise an animal for 4-H or FFA, regardless of where they live. That’s why we offer a limited number of donated spots each year to kids in town who want to participate in animal projects but don’t have the land or space to do so. If you need a spot for your animal, reach out—we’d love to help.

When Dan retired in 2001, he returned to the ranch full-time. His lifelong passion for horses was rekindled when a Chico High student asked to board her 4-H project horse here. None of us could have imagined that this simple request would spark the beginnings of Rose Lane Stables.

All these years later, we’re still carrying on Dad’s dream. Even after his passing in 2009, our family remains committed to his vision—providing youth with access to horses, agriculture, and hands-on learning. To further this mission, we founded the Freedom Riders Program, a nonprofit dedicated to education, inclusion, and the healing power of horses.

🐎 Freedom Riders of Chico

A Therapeutic Riding Program

To continue giving back to our community, we launched Freedom Riders—an adaptive & therapeutic riding horsemanship program based here at Rose Lane Stables in Chico, CA.

We’ve found a growing need in Butte County and surrounding areas for equine-assisted therapy. Freedom Riders provides opportunities for individuals with physical, cognitive, or emotional challenges to connect with horses and experience the healing, empowering benefits of horsemanship.

We believe horses have the power to change lives—for the better.
